Virtual Reality (VR) like the term suggests, creates a virtual atmosphere similar to the real world where you can interact with virtual objects. This is made possible with VR devices like headsets which create a 3D experience with standardized hardware and software support.

Augmented Reality (AR) is a similar concept, though much different from Virtual Reality. In AR, virtual objects are connected to an overlay of a real-life environment, whereas in VR a completely new virtual world is created.

Though there are many projects creating cutting edge VR experiences in which you can smell and sense virtual objects, the VR headset is the most commonly used device today.

There are many types of VR headsets. The larger ones are connected to PCs and work on VR software. There are also headsets which are designed to work with video game consoles. The latest VR headsets are stand-alone devices, which have the necessary software embedded. Additionally, there are less expensive headsets which can be used with smartphones. These devices have a slot to place the smartphone inside, which acts as the screen.

VR products have numerous applications, including simulations of actual situations. Though they were initially used to revolutionize gaming, the UK and US military have adopted VR to train their armies through flight, military, and emergency simulations. This helps provide authentic training at less cost. Apart from the military, VR products are largely used for educational purposes. They help medical students practice surgeries and procedures without consequences. The possibilities of VR  are being identified in new arenas each day.
